My Story
If we haven’t met yet, my name is Robin—and this is the story that led me here.
I grew up in a time when allergies were not common nor well understood. Born with a challenging hand and a silent storm in my immune system brewing louder and louder, by age two, I was officially diagnosed with severe allergies to dairy, nuts, sesame, (among other foods) and the environment. Additional to the severe food and environmental allergies, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), asthma, and eczema were soon added to the list of diagnoses. Though I outgrew some, I remained highly sensitive to the environment and large food groups. By high school, my eczema had spread to my face and hands, making everyday life challenging.
High School Recovery and Challenges and First Nutrition Experience
Early in high school, I was thriving; despite the allergies my health seemed to be making a recovery. I was told by a dietitian and my immunologist to remove gluten from my diet. Within 30 days my skin cleared of eczema for the first time—this was my first hands-on experience with nutrition.
Health Setbacks and Diagnosis
During junior year, however, I began experiencing unexplained symptoms: dizziness, racing heart, leg weakness, shortness of breath, nausea, headaches, and persistent pain. From being one of the top athletes, I began to decline, experiencing these strange and unsettling symptoms that mimicked a range of many possible diagnoses. After numerous specialists (cardiologists, pulmonologists, PCP, immunologists) and tests, I was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition largely misunderstood at that time. Despite the long list of medication prescriptions, nothing seemed to help. Fast-froward 2 years into college with the same outcomes I began to feel limited in my college experience as well. Both in lack of being able to try new things and debilitating symptoms including brain fog and fatigue, which affected my studies and resulted in failing my first semester even learning only part-time.
Taking Control Through Nutrition
Frustrated and disheartened, I made a decision: this would not be my life. So, I dove into research. I discovered how nutrition, hydration, and lifestyle changes could manage symptoms. By adopting a whole-food, low-sugar diet, increasing hydration, and cooking meals at home, I improved by 80% and incredibly, was able to stop all medications within that first year of making a change.
This transformation sparked something deeper. I realized the power of nutrition—and how little people really understood it. This experience inspired my purpose: to help others find their way back to health, just as I had. I switched my major to nutrition, completed the remainder of my undergraduate degree with strong grades, earned a prestigious dietetic internship at the Mayo Clinic, and not only completed, but excelled in my master’s at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Today, I am so fortunate to call myself a Registered Dietitian, guiding others to root causes of their health concerns with expertise and empathy.
